German with Pimsleur completed. What next?

A few days ago I finished audio German course prepared using Pimsleur method. At the same time I was learning from the book “Język dla początkujących” ("German for Beginners") by Wiedza Powszechna, but I think it is so boring and the dialogues are so sofisticated that I abandon it without regret for something more practical. What about the Foreign Language Institute Basic Course?

“Al-9arabiyatu bayna yadayk” completed

I just completed the first book of the series “Al-9arabiyatu bayna yadayk”. It was more like a review of what I have learned previously but of course there were some new things too. As I mentioned in one of my earlier posts, this course consists of 3 levels: books with accompanying audio material, it was published in Saudi Arabia and is written entirely in Arabic. It teaches Modern Standard Arabic.

Practicing Turkish with “Ezel”

Türkçe haziranı - Turkish June has been a perfect opportunity to try a new thing in learning Turkish. Although I watch sometimes Turkish TV, in particular TRT Türk which is available here in Poland via satellite, in my opinion it's very boring. I was looking for something else - more entertaining. I found a solution on You Tube. Yes, I know, it’s nothing new under the sun. The thing is I barely used You Tube this way. I can’t explain why, but I just didn’t. Now it’s changed. The first Turkish movie I watch in original (OK, I admit, with Polish subtitles) is “Ezel”.

“Ezel” is a TV series, which was aired in Turkey from 2009 until 2011. Two seasons were made - 71 episodes in all. It gained a considerably large fan base in Turkey.

As I just begun to watch it, I don’t know all the plot, and even if I knew it, I would tell it here. So just in short: Ömer was betrayed by his trusted friends and the woman he loved, Eyşan. He went to prison for a robbery and murder he didn't commit. He swore vengeance. He return under the name of Ezel, and after plastic suregery so none of his old friends recognizes him. That’s what the movie is about. It’s a love story, crime story and thriller in one.

As for now I quite like it. And that’s the most important thing in language learning and/or practicing: that you like what you do.

Sing along with Sertab: Sade

Weekend! Time for a bit of relax and entertainment... with music. Of course, as it's Türkçe haziranı, with Turkish music. Today I propose a beautiful song by Sertab Erener - "Sade" ("Pure"). Below you'll find an original text in Turkish and my English translation. I didn't try to make it very poetic, for me more important is to understand the text and to be able to translate it.

Dil öğrenmenin püf noktaları

Another post in the Türkçe haziranı - Turkish month. The previous one was posted on Sunday but that doesn’t mean that I didn’t do anything during these days. I reviewed next units from my favorite course, namely Foreign Language Insitute - reading and doing exercises as well as listening to the accompanying audio files and repeating. Today I’ve been reading another text from the “Türkçe okuyorum” book. And look! It’s about foreign language learnıng tricks - Dil öğrenmenin püf noktaları.

The rest of this post will be in Turkish :)

Miliyet Gazetesi Prof. Dr. Şeyda Ozil’le röportaj yaptı. Yabancı dil öğrenmek için ne yapmak gerekir? Işte onun cevabı:
-açık ve gerçekçi hedefler seçin,
-bazen yanlış konuşun,
-devamli yeni şeyler öğren, bunları tekrar edin,
-o dilin doğal metinlerini dinleyın ve okuyun,
-yeni arkadaşlar bul ve onlarıyla iletişim kurun.

Dil iletişim için vardır.

Türkçe okuyorum: Telefon sohbeti

Another day in this special month dedicated especially to learning Turkish. Today I reviewed two units (12 & 13) from the Foreign Language Institute course. I took a long walk with my mp3 player to do a practice I call “Walking like…” This time I was apparently “walking like a Turk, repeating aloud after the recordings. I also read another chapter from “Türkçe okuyorum” book - “Telefon sohbeti”.

Rüya görmek

Just another reading from the “Türkçe okuyorum” book. This text is about “Rüya” - which means: a dream (while sleeping). As we sometime exchange our views on sleeping and dreaming, especially on the meaning of our dreams, I think it may be useful to note down some words and expressions from the text.

rüya - dream
rüya görmek - to have a dream to dream

(I wrote this post entirely in Arabic - MSA. It's about Cracow, the city I live in.)

Singing with Tarkan and Alaa Wardi: Şıkıdım

Today I want to suggest to sing along again. It will be a song "Şıkıdım", made famous in Europe by Tarkan. However we're not gonna sing with him, but with Alaa Wardi. He's a very talented artist from Iran. He's brilliant with his covers of other artists' songs - using only his voice. It's really very entertaining!

How about Czech?

TEN POST MOŻNA PRZECZYTAĆ TAKŻE PO POLSKU

Czech has never been on the list of languages that I’m interested in learning. Now it has changed, but still it is not in any way a priority. I guess I start to pick new languages to learn more reasonably than before. Although I have never completely quit thinking about Swahili, I know that it would probably be of no use for me. Yet, for pure pleasure I'm learning Arabic. As for Czech, I will have an opportunity to use it from time to time in my work.

Share:

A może tak czeski?

TEXT AVAILABLE ALSO IN ENGLISH

Zaczynam chyba z większym rozsądkiem podchodzić do kwestii wyboru kolejnego języka do nauki.

I decided to "announce" June a month of the Turkish language. I will try to do something related to learning or practicing Turkish every day, even if it will be only reading a short paragraph or listening to music. Last months I have been quite busy with Turkish as I promised myself that it would be a priority this year. But I still have a feeling that I can do more. So Turkish June is a way to push the l limits.

Singing in Turkish with Sertab: Dönmüyorsun

Time for another Turkish song. This time it won’t be a Tarkan’s song, but a hit from another famour Turkish singer, my favorite - Sertab Erener. The title “Dönmüyorsun” - “You don’t return”. From lyrical point of view, it’s not a very complicated text, but the melody is quite catchy.

Singing in Turkish with Tarkan: Kayıp

Time for another song in Turkish. We're still with Tarkan. Even if his songs are not masterpieces we still can learn some useful vocabulary and automatize some expressions. This time we'll sing along to the song "Kayıp". First there's an original text, then my translation. I didn't try to make it poetic, but I wanted to keep as much as possible of the original vocab.

Singing in Turkish with Tarkan: Sevdanın son vuruşu

It's Sunday so it's time for some entertaining thing in Turkish - another song form his hit album "Adımı kalbine yaz". Lke other Tarkan's song, it's not a masterpiece of art, but as a pop song, it's nice to the ears and most of all, not difficult to sing for a foreinger who learns Turkish. It's also a good one to practice past tense, ability in the past and relative past. So... let's sing along!

Singing in Turkish with Tarkan: Adımı kalbine yaz

I have been trying lately to find a more fun way to learn Turkish and memorize some vocabulary, than reading textbooks. As I've always liked Tarkan's songs (yes, I know, it's not high art), I thought: why shouldn't I try to sing along? I like especially his album "Adımı kalbine yaz", released in 2010. It became the best selling album that year in Turkey, with more that 300,000 copies sold.

W ramach przerwy: niemiecki

Taking a break with... German

It has been a few weeks since my previous post. Despite assurances that I will write more often and more, I feel a bit discouraged whether it is worthwhile to continue this blog. Nevertheless I deciedd to write a little. This time it will be about... German. Recently I went on holiday and I decided that I would put away the languges I learn for two weeks, and as sort of taking a break I would read a little bit of German.

Kurs MSA Pimsleura - przerobiony

Na ten kurs czekałem dość długo. O ile firma Simon & Schuster dawno temu wypuściła dwa kursy arabskiego, a konkretnie egipskiego (jeden poziom) i wschodniego (trzy poziomy), o tyle kurs MSA (Modern Standard Arabic) pojawił się stosunkowo niedawno, jakieś dwa lata temu. Dostępne są dwa poziomy. To jeden z niewielu kursów konwersacyjnych obejmujących literacki arabski, więc pomaga wyćwiczyć i zautomatyzować najczęściej używane konstrukcje językowe. Przerobiłem oba poziomy.

MSA Pimsleur course - completed

I waited quite long for this course. Simon & Schuster released long time ago two Arabic courses, for Egyptian dialect (one level) and Eastern Arabic (three levels), MSA (Modern Standard Arabic) course was published recently, more or less two years ago. There are two levels available. It is one of the few conversational courses for literary Arabic, and it helps to drill and automatize the most often used linguistic constructions. I did both levels.

Priority for coming months: Turkish

As I wrote lately in the post about 2014 resume and resolutions for 2015, one of the priorities for coming months will be Turkish. I repeat myself, but I will admit once again that I have a problem with this language and I think what may be the cause. I tell myself that it is not the most difficult language in the world (is there anything like that?), so if I only to my best, I will manage to learn it!

Resume of 2014 and resolutions for 2015

It has been more than a month since I wrote my previous post, and a new year has begun, so it is  high time to make some kind of a resume. Actually I do not celebrate in any particular way the end of the old year. Who knows the history of changes in the calendars, they know that it is only a symbolic date. Obviously some of us need such dates to make account of what they have done and to think about resolutions for future. So I will do it also. My resolutions however are not an effect of one night reflections, but a result of several weeks of thinking...

Zatem zrobię to i ja. Moje postanowienia to jednak nie efekt jednej nocy, a wynik kilku tygodni przemyśleń...
