To know more: A modern history of Turkey

"Turkey. A Modern History" is according to many one of the best books about the history of this country. Its author, Erik J. Zürcher is professor of the Turkish studies at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands. As the title shows, the author focuses on the contemporary history, which by convention, dates form the Napolenic campagn in Egypt (1798-1801). He leads us, on more than 400 pages, through successive reforms - first in the Ottomona Empire and then independent republic, reforms which sought to transform Turkey into a modern state, which struggles to catch up with the development of its European neighbors.

Kurs DLI MSA - przerobiony

Właśnie skończyłem ostatnią lekcję z podręcznika Defense Language Institute Modern Standard Arabic Basic Course. Zajęło mi to ponad rok, ale wypada zaznaczyć, że jest to niezwykle obszerny materiał. Wystarczy powiedzieć, że obejmuje 18 tomów składających się z 143 lekcji plus dodatkowe książki z objaśnieniami gramatycznymi, słownikiem i dodatkowymi ćwiczeniami.

DLI MSA Basic Course - completed

Today I've completed the final lesson from the Defense Language Institute Modern Standard Arabic Basic Course. It took me over a year, but you need to know that this course covers extremely vast material. Suffice it to say that it consists of 18 volumes of 143 lessons plus several additional books with grammatical explanations, glossaries and supplementary exercises.

Wiedzieć więcej:
Współczesna historia Turcji

"Turkey.

A catedral do mar - book for coming weeks

Yesterday I started to read another book I have in Portuguese translation, namely "A catedral do mar", written by a Spanish writer, Ildefonso Falcones. Perhaps I should take an original version, but the truth is I bought the Portuguese translation while on a holiday in Lisbon. The most important thing is that I will read it in one of the languages I learn, and Portuguese of my favorites!

Understand better: "Modern Iran"

The Middle East has fascinated me for a long time. I would like to visit all the countries of that region, but it may not happen. However this is not what I am going to write about today. This post is dedicated to the book I just finished reading, entitled "Modern Iran. Roots and Results of Revolution". This is a book about a large, beautiful country which in the Western world is associated mainly with conservative Islam and human rights violation. It is worth to read this work to understand it better.

Zrozumieć lepiej: "Współczesny Iran"

Bliski Wschód pasjonuje mnie od dawna. Chciałbym zwiedzić wszystkie kraje tego regionu, ale zapewne nie będzie mi to dane. Nie o tym jednak chcę dzisiaj napisać. Ten post jest poświęcony książce, którą właśnie skończyłem czytać, zatytułowanej "Współczesny Iran. Źródła i konsekwencje rewolucji". To książka o wielkim, pięknym kraju, który w świecie zachodnim kojarzy się głównie z konserwatywnym islamem i łamaniem praw człowieka. Warto przeczytać tę pozycję, żeby zrozumieć go lepiej.

Daily training from AJ Learning - 10 June

Today I started another kind of practice in my Arabic language studies - reading short texts from "Daily trainings" offered by Al-Jazeera learning site. Well, it's not quite new because I've already read several texts from the media in Arabic. But this time I promise myself to read a short text every day. Wish me luck!

Learning Arabic with Al Jazeera

Some time ago Al Jazeera launched a learning Arabic site. I guess it's very useful for those who study Arabic (namely Modern Standard Arabic) seriously and want to practice what they learn. It you're a beginner it won't help you much though, it might be useful for those who are at least at an early intermediate level.

Another useful site: Learning Hindi!

I found this website while browsing the Internet in search for some materials about Hindi. Learning Hindi! is one of those sites which aren't overloaded, which are kept simple in design, but which are extremely useful for language learners. You can learn new vocabulary, structures, grammatical constructions as well as read some cultural tips etc.

Today I learned two useful Turkish constructions to express intentions. One of the uses the word "niyet", the other "can" which literally means "soul". These are obviously not the only ways to express willingness to do something. But as I like to enrich my vocabulary, I think writing them down with some examples may be helpful to remember them.
