Errors in „El nuevo Portugués sin esfuerzo”

Some time ago I promised to write about the errors I found in „El nuevo Portugués sin esfuerzo” (third edicion), published by Assimil in 2005. Some are more serious, some are less. I’m sure they are just a result of the careless editing or rather proof-reading. Nonetheless I think you shouldn’t find so many errors in a textbook.

Below are all the errors I noticed.

Page 55
In the review of the personal pronouns the tables are wrongly named. Pronouns for indirect objects with prepositions are given as the one that are used without prepositions and vice versa.

Page 121
Verb “sair” in the Present Tense – first person singular should be “saio” while it’s given here as “sais”

Page 150
In the point 4 there is a mistake in the form “apesar de sabernos” while it should be “apesar de sabermos”

Page 152
In the point 8 there is a review of the conjunction “enquanto” but the examples are about “assim que”

Page 177
There is a missing letter in the verb “ver” conjugated, the second person singular is written as “ês” while it should be “vês”

Page 178
Imperative form of the verb “beber” in the first person plural is written as “bebemos” while it should be “bebamos”

Page 180
In the point 4 dealing with Present Perfect there is a mistake in the second person singular of the verb “beber” which is given as “eu tens bebido” while it should be “tu tens bebido”

Page 210
There is a mistake in the point 4 in the table of the verb “falar”. The third person plural of the Personal Infinitive is written as “falar-e” while it should be “falar-em”

Page 210
At the end of the point 2 there is a cross-reference to the lesson 45 note 5, while it should make a reference to 45-4 (there is no note number 5)

Page 245
In the example for the verb “ter” there is a mistake in the word “bigode” which is spelt here as “bogode”

Page 293
In the exercise number  2 the word “No” is wrongly written as “No” in Portuguese while it should be spelt as “Não”

Page 302
In the answer key to the Exercise 2, point 1 there is a mistake in the word “avô” (grandmother) while it should be “avó” (grandfather)

Page 311
In the conjugation table of the Past of the verb “dar” the first person plural is given as “demus” while it should be “demos”

Page 313
There is a small mistake in the conjugation of the verb “saber”, it’s written as “soubessemos” while the first “e” should carry an accent mark thus the word should be written “soubéssemos”

Page 321
The pilot’s cockpit is written in the text as “cabine” but in the exercises on page 325 it’s written as “cabina”

Page 325
In the point 3 of the Exercise 2 the indefinite feminine article is spelt as “una” while it should be “uma”

Page 333
There are two occurrences of the wrongly written word for “princípes” because it should be spelt as “príncipes” with an accent on the first “i”

Page 333
There is a cross-reference number 5, but it’s wrongly given as number 3 in the Notes on page 334

Page 336
In the answer key to the Exercise number 2 there is a mistake in the word “navegaçao” which should be written as “navegação”

Page 341
In the note 2 under the text the example given is “Tinha querido” and it’s translated as “habías querido” while it should be “había querido”

Page 343
There is a mistake in the point 4of the Exercise no. 2. The word for “He” is written as “Elle” while it should be “Ele”

Page 346
In the point 3 there are four words given as examples, namely “dormer, subir, huir, acudir” while in the explanation we read about three – “… de estos tres verbos…”

Page 369
Paragraph 3 begins with “Assim é que é!”, in “Notas” under the text it’s written as “Assim e que é”, the firs one has a spelling mistake

Page 383
In the point 1 of the notes under the text there is an example “falou-se muito dele” which is translated into Spanish as “se habla mucho de él” while it should be “se habló…” because it's in Past Tense

Pages 397-398
Exercises point 4. Spanish text begins with “No creo que…” so in Portuguese it would be “Eu não acho que…”, but in the answer key there is “acha” which is in the third person singular instead of the first person; it should be “acho”

Page 416
Point 5 explains a gender of the nouns; there are several errors here:
-profesor, profesora – in Portuguese these words are spelt as “professor, professora” with double “s”
-in one of the paragraphs we read: “Pero ciertas palabras en –or tienen su plural en –riz…” while it’s not about creating a plural but a feminine gender
-feminine from “Catalão” is written as “Cátala” while there should be no accent written here

Page 417
In the point 6 the plural form of “actriz” is given as ”actrices” while it should be “actrizes”

Page 417
Point 7 deals with a comparison of adjectives – there is an error in “smaller” which is written as “menos” while it should be “menor”

Perhaps someone found anything else?

  1. Hola.
